Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) is a federal program that forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time for a qualifying employer. The forgiven amount is tax-free under current federal law, and there is no cap on how much can be forgiven.
Qualifying Employer
Government organizations at any level (federal, state, local, tribal), 501(c)(3) non-profits, and some other public service organizations.
120 Qualifying Payments
Make 120 on-time monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working for a qualifying employer. Payments do not need to be consecutive.
Tax-Free Forgiveness
The forgiven amount is not considered taxable income under current federal law — you receive complete relief with no tax bill attached.
